Arizona Shower 5/14/11

The wonderful Tieman ladies who threw the baby shower, and have always been there for me as my Arizona family.

My old Parkway buddies. Miss them, but definitely do not miss working there! Don't mind me and how HUGE I look!

My fellow Paradise Valley nurses and I. The three of us went through the new grad program together and currently work the night shift on the same floor. They are GREAT girls!

Baby Shower

My good friend Krista helped my mom to throw me a baby shower when we were home for my brother in law's wedding. It was fun, and really great to see everyone who made it.

This is my beautiful friend Kelly. She and I met in Arizona, but it turned out she is also from Northern Cali, and we went to competing highschools. I miss her a lot, and it was really great to see her!

My beautiful little sister, mom, grandma, and wonderful aunt.

Love this girl! Her work had its very own "Biggest Loser" contest and she won! She is an inspiration to me to get this baby weight off when the time comes.

While we were home, we got to see our little neice play softball. It made us excited for when our little girl is old enough to play.

My sister in law, she and I are due about a month apart from one another.

My other sister in law and I. She is also pregnant, but not due until a few months after me. We had family pictures that afternoon, and we are still wearing the matching family photo shirts.

Leeah got to work as a waitress at the reception. She was pretty hilarious!

Valentine's Day

I was so excited for Valentine's Day this year! Not because of all the usual stuff, but because we were suppose to find out the gender of this little guy. Unfortunately, he or she would not cooperate. Either that, or the tech just sucked. Either way, it was kinda disappointing. Now it may just have to be a surprise. We will see!

In November, we found out we are expecting our first baby in July! This was taken at 13 weeks.

This was taken just last week at 17 weeks.

In January, I got my first nursing job, and I just started last week!

Jex has applied to PhD programs, so we are anxious to find out about that! A lot is going on right now, so I am doing my best to take things one day at a time!

Jexson's parents got us a weekend in Sedona for Christmas. We finally used it in May when we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary.

Our messy room. The first night, I sort of flooded the bathroom, because I didn't know how to work the jets on the tub.

We went hiking, and after we got back to the starting point there were a bunch of people reading about the wildlife. One lady said, "look honey, javelina!" Only, she didn't pronounce the "j" like an "h", we were totally cracking up.

We took a lot of pictures of the landscape. Jex always says he loves the desert, and it has a beauty all its own. I am beginning to agree.

Driving home. Overall, we had a great time, and it was just what we needed to end the semester. Thank you Jan and Shirlee!

What would Christmas be without a trip to the crazy Engelbrecht house?

Who knew such a peaceful yard could exist behind such a crazy house? I've said it before and I'll say it again: you just don't see things like this in Arizona.

What would a trip home be without a visit with some old friends?

Cammi's Graduation

In June I got to go home for my youngest sister's highschool graduation. It was weird that she was graduating, I am very proud of her! All of the kids were there, which hasn't happened since Bernie graduated from law school in 2007! It was really great to see everyone!

I went out to dinner with Caitlin, Halee, and Drew, who is taking the picture. Caitlin and I have been friends since seventh grade, and Drew is the little sister of another longtime friend. She is also a friend of Halee's. Cammi scored a job here not even a week after graduation. Thanks again for the hook up Caitlin!

Of course I had to stop by the in laws and see my little buddy Leeah. She was missing both front teeth, so I had her pose in a picture just for Jex.

Catherine got a little tired on the way back. For some reason, as soon as we got in the car, she could not stop talking! She talked nonstop the entire drive home, which was about an hour! No matter what Tori did or said, that little girl just couldn't stop!

Mike, Halee, Cammi, and I went to Mom's house for lunch before going to the airport. I started bawling, because I hate to say goodbye. Halee drove Mike and I to the airport. We got sort of lost on the way, and Halee drove like a maniac so Mike wouldn't miss his flight. We were flying out about an hour apart. His flight ended up delayed, so we got to hang out while we waited. It was a really great trip, but too short!

We went to Guatemala for Christmas and New Year's with a couple friends this year. It was an adventure to say the least. After arriving in the city and renting a car at 9 PM, we proceeded to drive to Flores, which is near Tikal. The guys started to worry we were going to run out of gas, so we flipped around and started to ask everyone out (about 3 AM on Christmas) where we could find gas. Most the people out were drunk, and nobody really wanted to help, so we slept in our rental truck at this gas station in Rio Dulce. Not the nicest part of Guatemala.

We finally made it to Tikal, and it was awesome! There are all of these temple ruins in the middle of the jungle. We were able to climb on most of them, so we definitely got our exercise that day. Some of the steps were so worn away that people had fallen, so those were the ones we couldn't climb. The rest of the steps were good, but spaced very far apart.

You can get an idea about how high up we are, because we are higher then the trees. This was the last climb we did that day, so I was really out of breath. There were some native kids behind us cruising up the steps no problem.

Walking through the jungle on the way out, I saw this cute, little door to who knows where? Jex made fun of me for wanting a picture, but I thought it was cool.

Plus, I got him to take a picture at the door too. At times like this, I know he loves me.

Off the balcony in Flores

The first night we slept in a hotel was in Flores, which is outside of Tikal in Peten, Guatemala. It was pretty cool, because it has its own little island, which is where our hotel was. I should've taken a picture of the whole island, but this is one from our balcony.

Carlos and Noemi's

From Tikal we went to Teleman, which is one of the ares Jex served in. He knew some members there, named Carlos and Noemi, that he wanted to visit. They own a store, and allowed us to stay with them for the night. This picture is just outside their living room. Their house was super cool, because it was all connected, but each room led outside.

Senahu

We drove up to Senahu, which is where some of the k'ekchi' people live way up in the mountains. If you look up on the hill, it says Senahu in white. Jex served part of his mission in this area, so I had the opportunity to meet a bunch of the people he knew, which was cool. I also got to experience the stories you hear about the women not being shy at all about whipping it out and breastfeeding right in front of everyone. We were at the church for the baptism of a family, just chillin' outside, and a woman started to breast feed right there. It was kind of funny, but shocking to see someone do it at church. Our friends Josh and Claudia were with us, and we all went to church on the Sunday after Christmas in Senahu. It was all in k'ekchi', so my friend Claudia and I did not understand a word. However, they included us in the meeting by letting us know we would be bearing our testimonies, while our husbands translated for us. It was kind of funny to be told to bear my testimony, especially considering the circumstances. It turned out to be a cool experience, and the people were very welcoming.

This is just another view of Senahu with a Catholic church in the background. This was on market day in the town center, which explains all the tarps. Jex and Josh kept saying how much it had changed since last time they were there in 2004. For example, the bank sign to the left.

Crazy Road to Lanquin

This was on our way from Chijolom to Lanquin. To the right is the actual road we were on. From that road, we ended up on an even crappier road for about four hours. The guys thought it would be a cool route, because they had never taken it before, and they wanted to avoid being held up by bad guys. Jex was held up on the way to Senahu on his mission, and was robbed at gunpoint. Anyhow, we ended up four wheeling it for a few hours. It was kind of scary, because we were more than out in the middle of nowhere, and we kept hitting rocks and hearing thuds that were not comforting to say the least. Now that it is over, I can say it was a pretty cool adventure. Even though we were nowhere, we did pass through a couple plantations and picked up some random hitchhikers on their way to Lanquin or Coban.

The road we were taking to Lanquin, also went to Chamelco, which is where we were headed to stay another night with Carlos and Noemi. They have two homes. Because they were coming from Teleman, we beat them home, and had nowhere to go. We hung out in yet another gas station and I was bored, so I took this picture of Jex, Josh, and Claudia.

We drove to Atitlan which is where Lake Atitlan is. Lake Atitlan is assumed to be "The Waters of Mormon." This is the road up there. It was very cold and foggy, and there were tons of kids on the side of the road waving. They stand out there in hopes that tourists will give them food or money. I tried to get a picture of some of them, but it was hard while we were driving.

We had to go to the bank when we got to Atitlan, and we passed this church on the way from the bank to the hotel. Notice the little boy chillin' on the steps.

We did some shopping in the market, then walked down to the lake just as the sun was setting. There were many paintings for sale of the artist's interpretation of this view at sunset and at night. Jex and I were so close to buying one, but we cheaped out.

This is a woman carrying merchandise on her head. All of the women carry things to sell on their heads. They carry their babies on their backs, and you'll often see little girls carrying corn on their heads to be ground.

Tortilleria Paola

This is a tortilla shop that we bought tortillas at for breakfast and dinner both days we were in Atitlan. They sold them for 5 tortillas a quetzal, which is roughly 12 cents for five tortillas. They were small, but homemade and always hot.

This is our first hotel in Atitlan. It was probably the crappiest place I have ever stayed. The owners were nice, and it was clean, but just tiny and uncomfortable. The good thing was, it was VERY cheap. Jex is holding a soda in a bag. If you buy a soda in a glass bottle, they pour it into a plastic bag and give you a straw. They reuse the bottles. For some reason, Jex really enjoys the soda in a bag.

We had access to the roof of our hotel in Atitlan, so we decided to climb up there and take some pictures.

The purpose of this picture was to find the ugliest view from the rooftop. Once again, if you look in Jex's left hand, the soda in a bag.

Antigua

Our last stop was Antigua, which was the capital of Guatemala before Guatemala City. It has a bunch of old buildings, and places where you can buy jade and jade jewelry. We took a little tour in the jade shop, and I learned there are different shades of jade, including blue, lavendar, and black. The black jade is found only in Guatemala. In this picture we are in front of yet another Catholic church. People go inside like it's a museum, but people are also in there worshipping, so it's really weird.

Believe it or not, there are some nice hotels in Guatemala. This is one of them. Josh said that a lot of the rich people will have their weddings here, and it is easy to see why.

Kelly and I on top of Camelback Mountain

My friend Kelly and I decided to hike Camelback last Saturday the 8th of November. We got up early and got there around 7:30 am. She had hiked it before, but I was a Rookie and didn't know what to expect. She had warned me that it was pretty hard, but we had been running alot so I figured I'd be fine. I didn't do horrible, but man, what a workout! It was very steep, and I was using every muscle in my body to climb up all the rocks. Once we got to the top, the view was great, but the wind was blowing like crazy, and it was freezing! The next day, my whole body hurt, but it was worth it. I'd definitely do it again.

Jex/Emeril

For the most part, since we have been married, I have done almost all of the cooking. Jex will cook if it is BBQ, which is once in a while. Lately, for some reason, he has decided to get into cooking. He watches "Good Eats" on U Tube and tries new recipes. One night he decided to make fried chicken, so I had to take a picture of him cooking.

We went down to Tucson to visit Josh and Claudia in October. For those of you who don't know, Josh is one of Jex's mission buddies, and Claudia is his wife. The four of us went to Tombstone to hang out one Saturday. It was cold and rainy, but pretty cool. Kind of like Old Sacrmento. There are a bunch of old shops and restaurants. You can go to shows and take rides in horse carriages. We also went to an old graveyard just outside of the town.

We went to Disney Land with Jexson's family in May 2008. I had never been before so I was pretty excited. We celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary on that trip. Time is flying!

WE FINALLY MADE IT TO SEDONA AFTER LIVING IN ARIZONA FOR TWO YEARS. JEX WAS TAKING PICTURES WHILE I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH VARIOUS CALLERS WISHING ME A HAPPY BIRTHDAY. IT WAS VERY BEAUTIFUL UP THERE, AND THANKFULLY, NOT AS HOT.
